The original construction was done in 1542 by two priests and was initially named after the presentation of the virgin Mary. In 1767 the monastery was restored and took its present name after an icon of the Virgin Mary found in the nearby area of Tourlos. Since then Panagia Tourliani became the patroness of the island.

Whenever you talk about mykonos the first thing that springs in your mind are the windmills. They have become an icon for the island being that they a spread all around on the island but with the famous ones located between the settlement of Little Venice (as famously known) and the Niochori  area. The wind mills played a great role in the wheat production during the early 17th and 18th centuries which helped to boost the island's economic status. Though only five windmills are still remaining maintained in an inoperative conditions for touristic purposes.
